The whisky from this elusive Speyside distillery is always a rarity, as it has almost never been released in official bottlings. The influence of a 2-years finish in first fill Oloroso butts is evident in the winey, slightly sour note at the nose… although the fat distillery style still shines through, adding a curiously buttery touch. The palate is dominated by a nutty note, especially almonds: at times it really tastes like marzipan cookies! It’s slightly raisiny, with dried apricots too. There’s a contrast between the overall austerity of the style, the tannins from the oak, and the honeyed background. The tannic and austere side wins in the end, with a finale that’s rather oaky, a bit herbal, and again with a hint of almondy bitterness.

At the nose it initially seems quiet and restrained, but there is dark broody character lying beneath: the deep smokiness of pinewood embers smoldering in a fireplace, and of tarry ropes. At first sip, it reveals a surprising softness of heather honey, very elegant and well-behaved. After a few minutes, the smokiness builds up both at the nose and on the palate, becoming increasingly medicinal, while at the same time remaining in balance with the ripe fruitiness. A tannic hint becomes slightly noticeable in the end.

€ 37,00 VAT includedRead moreExtremely smoky, ashy, full of maritime notes and a marked medicinal touch with a very clean and malty spirit as expected from Bunnahabhain, but at the same time it packs a touch in terms of pure 'peat power'. On the palate it is interestingly herbaceous, with rich notes of black licorice, gentian root. The finish is particularly warm, peppery and persistent, with the smokiness that reverberates for a long time after each sip.
